What is our future?

Reading Response

       In the book "The Hunger Games", by Suzanne Collins, I noticed a lot of differences between their country and our country. A lot of people think the future will be flying cars, and a perfect world but in "The Hunger Games", it's the total opposite kind of future. In "The Hunger Games" their country has many poor districts that have to hunt for their own food, while another area is very wealthy and fortunate (like the Capitol). Their country is very unequal. In my opinion, the United States ,today, aren't extremely poor in one area but super rich in another. Although there are rich and poor people in the U.S., theres not as vast of a difference as there is in "The Hunger Games." I don't think that the nation in "The Hunger Games" is fair at all. Yes, there are some unfair things about our country too, but we don't have to take on the responsibilities people in "The Hunger Games" do.

       One reason I think the world in "The Hunger Games" is unfair is because Katniss goes out everyday to hunt. She must learn how to use a bow and arrow and learn how to kill animals. She then takes her catch of the day and trades it for other types of food. I feel as though the world went back in time in "The Hunger Games". In the mid to late 1600s, indians traded the way Katniss is forced to (although they didn't have things like bread then). What did Katniss and her people do to deserve all of that? They only rebelled to fight for what they believed in. People in our country do that today without being put under such harsh conditions. I find it even more unfair that the Capitol is so wealthy and they have so much nice food, and clothing, and housing. Why do they refuse to share their wealth? Today, people are trying to help other people around the world, and we are trying to become even more united then we already are! In "The Hunger Games" the Capitol treats some of the other districts with no respect at all!

       Overall, our country today is very different from the country that has been created in "The Hunger Games". It's scary to read "The Hunger Games" and see all of the horrible stuff that goes on. All we can do is hope that that isn't what our world turns into in the future! Hopefully our world will become a better place and that all of our hard work we put into this country over the past hundreds of years won't go to waste; it won't all be for nothing.
